AbstractThe features of a simple analytical model and its use on the study of the climatic consequences of a Amazonian basinwide deforestation/desertification are presented. The model includes a simplified landocean-atmosphere interaction in the tropics. Land and ocean areas are separated by fixed meridians. Over land, Gill’s model is coupled to the moisture conservation equation; over oceans, to a simple ocean model, which is able to simulate the expected gradient of sea surface temperature that appears when a ocean is forced by uniform easterlies. Coupling is obtained through the use of linear algebraic relations. The model is forced by evapotranspiration over land. The results show a reduction in both evaporation and moisture convergence; therefore, the heat source over Amazonia would weaken. This means a weakening of the Kelvin and planetary waves which emanate from Amazonia. The weakening of the Kelvin wave shifts the subsidence region over Atlantic westwards and enhances the moisture convergence over Africa. The weakening of the planetary wave shifts the subsidence region over Pacific eastwards, cools the cold waters of eastern Pacific and enhances the easterlies over the Central Pacific. Indonesia is not affected by Amazonia. The model does not include topography; therefore, all presented effects should be considered from this limitation.
